This depends upon what restrictions your homeowners association has regarding residents working at the pool. Some allow residents to lifeguard, while others do not.

What are the requirements for a lifeguard training class and what all does it include?

  1. In order to become certified as a lifeguard, you must be 15 years old by the last day of class.
  2. You must be able to complete the American Red Cross prerequisite swim test before you can begin the course. The test will be given on the first day of class. The prerequisite swim test includes:
    • Swim 300 yards continuously using breast stroke or front crawl demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Goggles may be used.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.
    • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point while holding the brick with two hands and then climb out of the pool. This event is timed. Goggles may not be used.
  3. You must complete and pass an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course.

The Lifeguard Training course includes: Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers/Health Care Providers and Bloodborne Pathogens.
